the Julie Simone Paddle at Exxxotica

Last weekend I hit Exxxotica in Edison, NJ to promote the paddle. XBiz was there and did a nice little write-up. More pics of the paddle at the link below!

the Julie Simone Paddle is Here!!

This has been something I’ve tried to make happen for years. First I contacted some major novelty distributors, but I wasn’t willing to (a) put my name on whatever they wanted to put out regardless of quality and (b) get paid .05%

So true to form I found a way to do it myself. I wanted to be sure the quality would be good. We had to go through some trial and error. The first paddles were too thick, you could have killed someone with one of those! The next batch was too light. I was starting to feel like I was in a twisted version of the Goldilocks & the 3 Bears! The next one, thankfully was just right.

Then there were problems with the stain. I wanted dark wood with a bright gold logo. The first batch I stained looked beautiful but was sticky even days later. So we got a different type of stain. It was pretty, but too light. So we got another stain, it too was lighter than what I wanted originally but I liked that one could see the grain of the wood so we went with it.

The painting of the logo had its own set of problems, handpainting something that small in scale is a giant pain in the ass. The 1st paint didn’t show up well enough, using gold leaf was a nightmare. Finally I found a paint that was thick enough and not too hard to get into those tiny crevices.

The 2 steps that had no problems at all, thankfully, were the leather strap & the gloss layer.

This paddle is strong. It’s not going to break the first time you use it or the 100th time you use it. As a left handed person I find it annoying when I buy products and the logos are upside down because it was made for right handed people. So, I have a right handed and a left handed paddle. One can also choose between the gold logo which with the lighter wood is less of a contrast (though ironically is more work), or the natural etched logo which looks really nice with the grain of the wood.
